The famous Marc Chagall painting "The Birthday" is considered a declaration of love towards his wife, Bella. It was created a few weeks before their wedding took place, despite her parent’s disapproval. In an ode to the euphoria one feels when in love, we see them both entranced in an ethereal, romantic moment.
Our version of the painting sees the couple celebrating their love with a cake. Chagall’s love for Bella and his desire to kiss her feature prominently in the whole piece. The element of the kiss, specifically, can be found in many aspects of the artwork, like the flower bouquet or the wall mosaic. Bella is the driving force of their affection, as she spins the “wheel of love” which goes through Chagall’s belly, suggesting the feeling of butterflies in our stomach when we’re in love.
